Chicago strikes again. One weekend the weather is beautiful — 60-degrees and sunny — and the next weekend we wake up to a blanket of snow covering the city.
Thanks for nothing, Chicago.
But instead of being down-in-the-dumps about the cool air and wet snowflakes, reevaluate your beauty routine and wardrobe for rejuvenated skin and overall warmth.
Truth be told I'm not skincare expert. I have extremely dry lips, and my skin has resembled the Sahara Desert more than once this winter. But nonetheless, I have found found a few ways to quickly fight dry skin that is smooth, dewy and flake-free!
1. FIND A KICK-BUTT MOISTURIZER
If I could write this more than once without being a nuisance I would: moisturize, moisturize, MOISTURIZE. Applying thick creams to your face is of the utmost importance — day AND night. But don't be mistaken, you should always use two different creams depending on the time of day you apply it.
Night creams are typically thicker and work best when applied right before bed. Your skin will absorb the product overnight and you'll wake up fresh-faced and hydrated.
Day creams on-the-other-hand are most effective when applied in the morning right before your makeup. The consistency of day creams are usually thinner than night creams, and work as a prep for your face "canvas." Day creams are an essential part of avoiding a 'cake face' because they hydrate your skin and prevent flaking pre-makeup.

2. DON'T NEGLECT PRIMER
Primer is commonly forgot but easily one of the most important steps to achieving a face free of cracks and flakes.
Primer works as a base for the rest of your makeup: foundation, concealer, etc. When choosing a primer, it's important to know your skin type. Maybe you have oily skin, maybe extra dry skin, perhaps combination skin, or maybe you have self-proclaimed 'perfect' skin. Regardless, it's important that you pick a primer that is geared towards your skin type.
Primer works wonders on sealing off your pores to prevent breakouts. Breakouts are the worst, especially when the weather is dry because most spot treatment products dry out your skin and cause more flakiness.
So instead of worrying about breakouts, opt for a quality primer to prevent acne and pimples.

3. FOREGO THE 'CAKE FACE'
Nothing is worse than applying all of the necessary pre-makeup essentials to your face and then being left with cakey and dry skin. The best way to avoid a 'cake face?' Opt for a hydrating BB, CC, or moisturizing foundation instead of your typical full-coverage one.
I've found that moisturizers and primers work best when a thin layer of creamy and hydrating foundation is applied afterwards. So say sayonara to cracked skin, and hello to a glowy face worthy of a close-up!

4. MAKE COCONUT OIL YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND
When you think that your skin has hit its lowest point try coconut oil.
Coconut oil is God's natural skincare gift to us when all else fails. Full of natural oils that smell great and make your skin feel awesome — none of that fake stuff like parabens and words you can't pronounce — coconut oil is the way to go.
How I incorporate it into my skincare routine? Right before bed, I take a very small amount (I'm more prone to oily skin so I don't need as much, but you can always adjust if your skin tends to be more dry) and apply it all over my face including my lips. Yes you will look oily and greasy but trust me, when you wake up in the morning your skin will be as good as new!
