After years of trial and error I feel as though I have finally combated my oily skin. While a glowing and dewy face is in, I never enjoyed having my shine on my chin and forehead, and having to carry around oil-blotting sheets or translucent powder in my purse to manage the grease throughout the day. As someone who was convinced I could fix my "skin problems" with drugstore products, I soon learned that not only are drugstore products filled with cheap ingredients, but they don't work. I found that when I spent a little more money on better products my skin not only looked better but felt better.
Today, I'm sharing with you my updated makeup routine that's perfect for spring — it adds the right amount of glow without having a "cake face." If you missed last week's post on my update spring skincare routine you can click here to read it. Enjoy!
I believe that makeup should be used to enhance natural beauty, but I would be lying if I said that I was 100 percent confident in showing my naked face in public. While we all have insecurities I think it's important to realize that wearing makeup shouldn't be viewed at negatively, and if you prefer wearing no makeup — THAT'S AWESOME. If you prefer wearing some makeup — GREAT! If you love wearing a lot of makeup — YOU GO! Regardless of how little or how much makeup you wear, I do believe in one thing: wear makeup that is good for your skin and good for the environment.
There's an abundance of cosmetic brands out there that not only aren't good for your skin, but also harm the environment and use unethical practices for their testing. I use — and swear by — two main makeup brands which I incorporate into my everyday routine: Tarte, NYX, and BareMinerals.
HERE'S MY ROUTINE
To start off I moisturize my face. In last week's post I talk all about my skincare and you can read more about that here.
After my skincare regimen, I prime my face with Smashbox's Photo Finish Primer (I was using Pacifica's Jasmine Iris Primer but it ran out. Thankfully the Smashbox Primer I had on hand is also cruelty-free). I apply the primer in a downward motion. Why? Since your pore open upwards and the purpose of primer is to seal your pores off from dirt, makeup, etc., from entering them you close them off my applying the primer down — don't forget this!
After applying primer I apply my face makeup. I start off by dotting Tarte's BB Tinted Treatment Primer in "light" all over my face and blending it with RealTechnique's Tapered Foundation Brush and then patting it into my skin with a RealTechnique's Beauty Sponge. Then, I apply NYX's HD Studio Concealer in "CW-02" under my eyes (#designerbags) and on the bridge of my nose to highlight — I blend this with a beauty blender. To set my makeup I use Tarte's BB Confidence Creamy Powder Foundation in "fair-light" neutral, not only does it set my makeup but it also adds a bit more coverage.
Time for the brows! I really don't do anything too dramatic with my brows. I brush them out with a spooly, then shape and fill them in with a brown eyeshadow from Tarte. It's that easy —and lemon-squeezy.
After my brows it's onto my eyes. I used to do a lot of dramatic eyeshadow, but I've decided I like minimal makeup best — it's just what looks good on me! I always use my Tarte Young, Wild & Free palette (this was limited edition but I linked a similar one below!), and I apply either "party" (which is a shimmery nude) or "lucky charm" (which is a shimmery gold) all over my lid (if I'm feeling a bit more sparkly I'll apply Urban Decay's Midnight Cowboy to my lid — it's a gorgeous glitter blush color). After eyeshadow, I take my NYX Wonder Pencil in "light" and apply it to my waterline to brighten my eyes. Next, I use my NYX Epic Ink Liner in "black" to create soft wings and. I finish off my eyes with a few coats of Tarte's MANEATER mascara to both my bottom and top lashes.
To finish off the entire face I apply Tarte's Amazonian Clay Matte Bronzer in "park ave princess" and BareMinerals blush in "pink tourmaline" to give some color to my face. I don't do anything special with this — I don't contour because I just want to add some natural flush to my face.
I use my Ponds Cold Cream makeup remover to fix any lopsided wings, and if I'm feeling special I'll apply a little bit of Tarte's Lippie Lingerie in exposed.
